What is RPL? (And what it isn’t)

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

If you’ve worked in an industry for a number of years, you may have heard that you can “get qualified through RPL”.

Whilst that is true, there are many misconceptions about what Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) actually involves.

One of the biggest myths is that you simply submit a resume, answer a few questions and receive a qualification.

That is not how a quality RPL process works.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you have gained through work experience, previous training, volunteering or life experience.

Under the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) system, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) must determine whether you can demonstrate competency against every requirement of every unit of competency within the qualification.

The assessment standards are exactly the same as they are for students completing the qualification through training. The only difference is the way the evidence is gathered.

What evidence do I need to provide?

Every qualification and every student is different, but an RPL assessment commonly requires a combination of evidence from multiple sources.

Examples may include:

  • Detailed resumes and employment history
  • Position descriptions
  • Employment contracts
  • Letters from employers or supervisors
  • Performance reviews or appraisal documents
  • Workplace policies and procedures you regularly use
  • Completed workplace documents and records
  • Work samples or portfolios
  • Photographs or videos of you performing workplace tasks (where appropriate)
  • Professional development records
  • Licences or registrations
  • Statements of attainment or previous qualifications
  • Third-party reports completed by supervisors
  • Logbooks or workplace diaries
  • Referee verification
  • Interviews or competency conversations with an assessor

Depending on the qualification, you may also be asked to complete practical demonstrations, knowledge questions or workplace observations to confirm your competency.

What happens with all of that evidence?

Collecting evidence is only one part of the process.

Our assessors carefully review each document to determine its authenticity, relevance, currency and sufficiency. Evidence may be verified with employers, supervisors or other third parties before it is accepted.

Once verified, the evidence is systematically mapped against every component of each unit of competency. This includes:

  • Performance Criteria
  • Performance Evidence
  • Knowledge Evidence
  • Foundation Skills (where applicable)
  • Assessment Conditions

Only when sufficient evidence exists to demonstrate every assessment requirement can competency be awarded.

If there are gaps, additional evidence or assessment activities may be required.

Why is the process so thorough?

Nationally recognised qualifications certify that an individual can perform to the standard expected by industry.

For that reason, RTOs have a responsibility to ensure every graduate has demonstrated the required competency.

A rigorous RPL process protects the integrity of your qualification, provides confidence to employers and ensures the qualification continues to have value across Australia.

What if I have plenty of experience but can’t obtain all the evidence?

This is actually quite common.

Perhaps you’ve changed employers, the business has closed, records are no longer available, or you simply don’t have access to the workplace documentation required for an RPL assessment.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to complete the entire qualification from the beginning.

If you have substantial industry experience but cannot obtain the full range of documentary evidence, speak with our team about an Assessment Only pathway.

Following an initial review of your experience, we may determine that you are suitable to undertake assessment without participating in formal training.

This pathway allows experienced workers to demonstrate their competency through assessment activities such as practical demonstrations, workplace observations, knowledge assessments and other evidence, rather than relying solely on historical workplace documentation.

Assessment Only is not available in every circumstance, and eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis. Our team will discuss your experience and recommend the pathway that best suits your individual situation.

Not sure which option is right for you?

Whether you’re considering RPL, Assessment Only, or completing a qualification through training, our team can help you determine the most appropriate pathway.

We’ll discuss your experience, review your background and explain the evidence requirements so you can make an informed decision before enrolling.

Our goal is simple: ensure you achieve a nationally recognised qualification through a fair, robust and compliant assessment process that genuinely reflects your skills and experience.
