Hospital Pharmacy Technician (Short course)
Overview
The Hospital Pharmacy Technician (Short Course) is designed for individuals working in a hospital or health services pharmacy environment. This course provides the essential operational skills and knowledge required to support pharmaceutical procurement, stock control, imprest management, packaging processes and dispensing activities within clinical settings.
Participants will develop competency in monitoring and replenishing imprest stock, ordering and maintaining pharmaceutical inventory, safely packaging and labelling products, and assisting with the dispensing of prescriptions and medication orders under the supervision of an authorised person. The course emphasises legislative compliance, cold chain maintenance, batch and expiry control, documentation accuracy, infection control and quality assurance processes.
This short course supports hospital pharmacy assistants and technicians in meeting workplace expectations for safe medication handling, stock traceability, secure storage, and accurate pharmacy system use, ensuring readiness to operate effectively within hospital pharmacy teams. This program contains four (4) nationally recognised units of competency which can be used for credits towards the full HLT37121 Certificate III in Hospital or Health Services Pharmacy Support qualification. This course requires the completion of a minimum of 240 hours work in a hospital pharmacy undertaking a range of related workplace activities.
This course supports the Pharmacy Board’s Guidelines for dispensing of medicines.
Training Overview
Course Delivery
This course is completed online alongside paid employment in a hospital pharmacy setting. The program contains learning and assessment including simulated performance activities as well as a checklist for a supervising Pharmacist to complete. Students are provided with 4 months access to the portal to complete the required training and assessment. Course extensions are available at $50 per four week period.
Training
Training for this course is completed by:
- Reviewing and engaging in our Learner Guide that contains detailed readings and videos.
- Undertaking our live training workshops
- Utilising our workplace training record book for the development of practical skills
- Completing the learning log. This log supports you confirm you have developed the knowledge and skills before undertaking assessment.
Assessment
Assessment for this course is completed by:
- The completion of written short answer questions and checklists
- The completion of your learning log
- The completion of a supervisor report completed by a supervising Pharmacist
- An observation by our assessors in your workplace (in person or via zoom)
Online Portal
All course resources are provided in our Axcelerate portal with the addition of live, scheduled training workshops via Zoom. Our course is 100% paperless providing you with 24/7 access to course content. Students undertaking this course will be able to use a computer and various internet programs without assistance.
Entry Requirements
Entry into this qualification is available for individuals:
- Who are an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, New Zealand citizen or eligible visa holder
- Able to read and write in English
- Have the technical skills and equipment to undertake our programs
- 16 years of age or older (parent or guardian consent is required for under 18)
- Working in an Australian hospital pharmacy
